Dr. Sucharita Sen has joined as the Executive Director of SaciWATERs in October 2016 and is on leave from position of Professor in the Centre for the Study of Regional Development, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She was a Nehru-Fulbright Fellow in 2009-10 and was associated with Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA during this period. She is an economic geographer and has published in areas of natural resources and livelihoods, specifically focusing on spatial dynamics of land and water and their connections with the society. Her recent engagement and publications are on labour and gender, with a spatial focus on peri-urban areas, which has experienced fast paced urban expansions and in-migration in the last two decades. She has just completed a major collaborative work on ‘Gender Atlas’ funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and is currently a team member of the Inter-University Consortium on Cryosphere and Climate Change (IUCCCC) , where her role is to analyse adaptation and adaptive capacities in the Himachal Himalayas.

Dr. Poulomi Banerjee

Dr. Poulomi Banerjee holds a PhD in watershed management from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Prior to joining SaciWATERs she was working as a researcher in Water Resource and Policy Division (WRPM) of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi. She has been working in the field of water supply and sanitation, natural resource management, climate change, agriculture, governance and policy issues for the past seven years. She has proficiency in handling both research and implementation related projects and is associated with various national forums and societies. She looks into the peri urban and the study of disappearing lakes projects as a Senior Fellow in SaciWATERs.

Philippus Wester

author05 Chief Scientist, Water Resources Management

Dr Philippus (Flip) Wester, Chief Scientist Water Resources Management at the ICIMOD since March 2013, is a water resources management and governance expert with 20 years of experience in developing, managing and implementing research, capacity building and education programmes in water resources management.

From 2001 to 2013 he was an Assistant Professor of Water Governance and Institutional Change at Wageningen University, Wageningen, The Netherlands, after working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands as Bilateral Associate Expert Water Management in Bangladesh from 1995 to 1998 (with the Bangladesh Water Development Board) and in Mexico from 1998 to 2000 (with the International Water Management Institute). In his research and capacity building, he focuses on land and water resources management from an integrated and transdisciplinary perspective, with attention to the politics and governance of water resources, river basin management, water reform and allocation processes, floods and water governance in mountains and deltas, participatory groundwater management, and irrigation water management. Trained as an interdisciplinary sociotechnical water management researcher with a PhD degree in Water Resources Management from Wageningen University, he has 20 years of professional experience, in which he has developed a thorough understanding of the interrelationships between the social, technical, political and physical dimensions of water resources management.

He combines research with capacity building and has a strong track record in the management of complex projects, including as Principal Investigator of the NWO-WOTRO Integrated Programme ‘Communities and institutions for flood resilience: enhancing knowledge and capacity to manage flood risk in the Bangladeshi and Dutch Deltas’. He was the overall project director for the consortium led by Wageningen University executing the Nuffic NICHE project on ‘Capacity Building for Integrated Water Resources Management in South Africa’ and project coordinator for Wageningen University in the Nuffic funded ‘Strengthening Ethiopian Universities in Integrated River Basin Management’ project.

As a researcher he has designed and executed interdisciplinary water management research projects in Senegal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mexico, Ethiopia, South Africa, and the Netherlands and has published some 50 articles and book chapters on river basin management, water governance and institutional change, participatory groundwater management, and irrigation management transfer, including a well-received book on water management in Bangladesh. He is a founding member of the editorial board of Water Alternatives and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Water International since March 2012, and regularly peer reviews articles for journals including Water International, Agricultural Water Management, Water Policy, Irrigation Science, Water Alternatives, Journal of Hydrology, ASCE Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management, Geoforum, and Environmental Management among others.

Flip received his BSc and MSc (cum laude) in Tropical Land and Water Use from Wageningen University and a PhD in Environmental Sciences also from Wageningen University.

Prof. Shah Alam Khan

Dr. Khan conducts research primarily in coastal engineering, coastal zone management, water-related natural disasters, and urban water systems, with special attention to coastal vulnerability and disaster risk reduction, storm surge and tsunami hazard assessment, estuarine hydro-morphology, and urban/peri-urban water systems dynamics. In his twenty five-year professional career, Dr. Khan also explored the interdisciplinary areas of water security, hydro-climatic vulnerability and adaptation, ecosystem services and community resilience, and built a long-standing collaboration with national and international multidisciplinary partners.

Dr. Khan teaches postgraduate courses in Coastal Zone Management, Urban Water Management, Water Resource Systems Analysis, and Interdisciplinary Field Research Methodology, and links his research experience to academic teaching and advising. Apart from his academic teaching at BUET, Dr. Khan delivers lectures in training and capacity-building programs, and offers professional consultation and advisory services.

Dr. Rezaur Rahman

Dr. Rezaur Rahman is currently a Professor at Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He is a Civil Engineering graduate of BUET. He did his Masters from Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering of the Johns Hopkins University, USA and earned his Ph.D in Environmental Engineering from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA. He teaches Climate Change Risk Management in the postgraduate programme of IWFM. He has supervised a number of M.Sc theses on climate change especially in Khulna region. He was involved in the recently completed research project titled ‘Water security in peri-urban South Asia: adapting to climate change and urbanization’. At national level, he has been involved in preparation of National Adaptation Program of Action (NAPA) for climate change and Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (CCSAP) of Bangladesh.

Dr. Vishal Narain

Vishal Narain is Associate Professor, Public Policy and Governance at MDI, Management Development Institute, Gurgaon. He holds a PhD from Wageningen University, the Netherlands. His teaching and research interests are in the inter-disciplinary analyses of public policy processes and institutions, water governance, vulnerability and adaptation to environmental change and periurban issues.

His research has been published in several international peer-reviewed journals like Water Policy, Water International, Environment and Urbanization, Local Environment: the International Journal of Justice and Sustainability and Mountain research and Development. He has recently co-edited ‘Globalization of Water Governance in South Asia (Routledge)’. He is currently co-editing ‘Water Security in periurban South Asia: adapting to climate change and urbanization (Oxford University Press)’ and ‘Indian Water Policy at the Cross-Roads: Resources, Technology and Reforms (Springer, the Netherlands).’ In the past, he was the Editor of the journal Resources, Energy and Development (2004-06).

He was lead author for a chapter on human vulnerability to environmental change for GEO- (Global Environment outlook)- 4, the flagship publication of UNEP, the United Nations Environment Programme. He received the SR Sen Prize for the Best Book on Agricultural Economics and Rural Development conferred by the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics (2002-03) for his book ‘Institutions, technology and water control: water users’ associations and irrigation management reform in two large-scale systems in India (Orient Longman, 2003). He has recently completed consultancy assignments for IWMI, International Water Management Institute, Colombo, STEPS Center, University of Suusex, U.K. and SaciWATERs, South Asian Consortium for Inter-Disciplinary Water Resources Studies, Secunderabad, India.

Dr. ATM Zakir Hossain

Dr. ATM Zakir Hossain Executive Director, Jagrata Juba Shangha

ATM Zakir Hossain, the founder of JJS, born in 1967 and earned his master’s degree in commerce from Rajshahi University. He became a member of Service Civil International at the age of 15. Participated the alternative social summit (World Young Social Workers Gathering UFO 95) in Copenhagen, Denmark. He has done International Environmental Education Course organised by NAAEE, The Smithsonian Institute and The Academy for Educational Development in Washington DC in 1995. He did the International Project Management programme for NGOs, Globalverkstan, in Gothenburg, Sweden 1n 2004- 2005. Organisational development is one of his areas of expertise achieved by leading JJS for around 30 years as the Executive Director. He has capacity, experience, and demonstrated skill in Research, project design and implementation, human resource management, liaison and coordination.  He is well-versed in the areas of policy analysis, capacity building, participatory monitoring and evaluation, and development support communication.  He possesses extensive and diverse partner management experience gained through involvement in partnership based projects. Climate change, gender, human rights, Child Protection and governance are preferred major subject areas where he made attributive contributions.

My research and work experience has mainly been carried out in developing countries. Currently, I am a thematic manager at MetaMeta, The Netherlands.

Sumit Vij

Sumit Vij holds a Masters degree in Sustainable Development Practices from TERI University, and completed his bachelor’s in Chemistry from University of Delhi. He also holds a masters degree in Development Management from Tata-Dhan Academy, a collaborative effort of Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) and DHAN Foundation. Before joining SaciWATERs, he worked as a consultant on the Living with Climate Change project with partners in India, Nepal, Pakistan and Canada. He was responsible for designing, planning, and the implementation of the project in semi-arid sites of India, the research methodology followed the socio-cognitive framework to capture community perceptions in the semi-arids. He also gained experience in project designing and coordination while working on the National Dairy Plan at the National Dairy Development Board, Ministry of Agriculture.

His research interest lies in environmental governance and he brings special emphasises on sustainable development in the research through an integrated understanding on discourses of social, political, and environmental significance. He currently focuses on the peri urban water insecurity and climate change projects as Associate Fellow in SaciWATERs.

Monica holds a Master’s degree in Urban Development and Management, from TERI University, New Delhi, and a Bachelor’s degree in Facilities and Services Planning from Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University- School of Planning and Architecture, Hyderabad. As a part of her Master’s thesis she did a Comparative Study of Urban water Supply in Regularised and Unauthorised colonies of Delhi, to understand the impingement on the resources of the service provider. During her course of study she was associated with the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, Delhi and Centre for Economic and Social Studies, Hyderabad.

She is currently involved in the CoCooN Project- Conflict and Cooperation over Natural Resources in Developing Countries focussing on peri urban water security.

Mr. Sheikh Nazmul Huda

Mr. Sheikh Nazmul Huda Researcher, Jagrata Juba Shangha

Sheikh Nazmul Huda obtained his graduation in commerce under National University of Bangladesh. He has 20 years of experience in different managerial positions in the development fields with Jagrata Juba Shangha (JJS). He has had an experience working as project Coordinator in WASH project supported by SIMAVI, Netherlands. He has also worked on Governance and Human Rights Issues, Water Rights Issues and Emergency Response to Cyclone Mohasen and Water Logging in South West Coastal Region of Bangladesh with the support of Concern Worldwide. He received training on basic management, PRA, disaster vulnerability analysis, basic TOT, participatory monitoring and evaluation of development programmes etc. Nazmul had worked as manager in monitoring and evaluation unit of JJS. He had also worked as field supervisor on human Wildlife Interactions in the Sundarbans reserve forest research project led by JJS and Peoples’ report on Education led by Action Aid Bangladesh. He is now working as project coordinator of Climate Policy, Conflicts and Cooperation in Peri-Urban South Asia: Towards Resilient and Water Secure Communities project at Jagrata Juba Shangha (JJS) from December 2014.

Venu Gopal

Venu Gopal Field Associate, SaciWATERs

Venu Gopal holds a masters degree in Sociology from the Sri Krishna Devaraya University (SKU), Ananthapuramu. He has more than nine years of development sector experience in implementation various rural development programmes. He has earlier worked at MYRADA, a pioneering organization in building people institutions like SHGs, Watershed Users Associations and CMRCs. He was part of the Kadiri Project as CMRC (Community Managed Resource Centre) Manager, and also worked in APMAS, a reputed national level capacity building organization of the SHG movement and community based inclusive interventions as a capacity building officer. He specializes in social mobilization, designing and implementing capacity building programs. He also has more than 5 years of experience in conducting various capacity building events on book keeping, auditing, financial management and systems, and participatory training methodologies (PTM).

Dr. Anamika Barua

Dr. Anamika Barua is the Executive Director of SaciWATERs. She has a MA in Economics from Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics and PhD in Ecological Economics from the University of Leeds, UK. Her PhD focused on an empirical assessment of inter-state disparity of water pollution in India taking the major rivers of the country. Dr. Barua’s work focuses on interdisciplinary issues from both the natural and social sciences to understand environmental change and livelihood dynamics. Currently her research focuses on the science-policy interface in water resources management and climate change adaptation. She has extensive field research in rural India studying the linkages between access to water, livelihoods and climate change uncertainty. Her field of experience include water governance, water economics,sustainable cities, water and sanitation, climate change resilience and adaptation. Before joining SaciWATERs, Dr. Barua was working as an Associate Professor in Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. She has published widely in leading international journals, book chapters, working papers, book reviews, newspaper articles and policy briefs.

Anushiya Shrestha

Anushiya Shrestha is currently pursuing her Phd in Wageningen University under the research project “Climate Policy, Conflicts and Cooperation in Peri-urban South Asia: Towards Resilience and Water Secure Communities” funded by Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research, NWO. Her study focuses on the dynamics of water-related conflicts and cooperation around changing water access and rights in the peri-urban Kathmandu valley and their interlinkages with the water, urban and climate change-related policies and processes. She completed M.Sc in Environmental Science from Tribhuwan University, Nepal in 2009. She worked as Research Assistant under the IDRC supported Peri-urban Water Security in South Asia from 2010 to 2014.
