Drought preparedness of vulnerable sections in rural Telangana

08/01/2017 - 12/31/2017

The impacts of a drought are highly gendered given the different roles of men and women in the household with regard to water, livestock, food, and agriculture. While men discussed droughts more in terms of agriculture failure, women focussed on lack of income for basic household items (salt, detergents, utensils etc), lack of water for washing and bathing, long queues for water at stand posts and tankers, cutting down on meals and prioritising children for meals. Men did not consider these aspects of drought vulnerability.

India is experiencing extreme weather events in the form of droughts, floods, unprecedented rainfalls. These threats are bound to intensify as the climate continues to warm. The impact of these changes will take a heavy toll on the poor and marginalized communities. In such a scenario, a well-developed disaster preparedness plan can protect citizens from shortages of food and water. Droughts have far-reaching effects on a community and intersect with other natural hazards. Therefore, it is important to have a comprehensive drought planning which can help the community to consolidate their resources before the onset of the disaster. In the light of above the research study reviews the drought policies at national and state level (Telangana) and brings into light about awareness level of people in the region about such policies.
