Crossing Boundaries

04/01/2005 - 12/31/2014

“Throughout the world, interventions in the water sector are through the Water Resources Department (WRD). This is unfortunate, as WRD are guided by engineering frameworks and fail to consider the socioeconomic and other inter-disciplinary aspects to water management. There is a dire need to adopt a more holistic approach towards efficient water usage. I feel that the implementation of IWRM techniques in all project planning, design and implementation is critical” says Nazmun Naher, Ex-SAWA Fellowship recipient of BUET, Bangladesh"

Since its inception in 2005, the Crossing Boundaries has sought to promote an interdisciplinary approach in analysing and understanding water resource management issues. These include issues like inter-sectoral and inter-regional water resources allocation and use, institutional transformation and policy reforms, stakeholder participation in policy, planning and implementation of inclusive forms of governance, interdisciplinary analysis and modeling and incorporation of ecological sustainability and empowerment perspectives in water resources policy and practice.

The project works on these issues on a partnership basis through capacity building of water professionals on IWRM and gender and water. This is achieved through innovation in courses, focused research, knowledge-based enhancement, networking and outreach activities. The partner institutions are:

  • Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS), Dhaka, Bangladesh
  • Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh
  • Centre for Water Resources (CWR), Anna University, Chennai, India
  • Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka
